Художник написав цю картину в травні 1889 року, коли перебував у лікарні для душевнохворих в Сен–Ремі. На початку перебування йому було заборонено виходити на прогулянки на природу, тому Ван Гог малював те, що бачив в лікарняному саду в травні.
