Не секрет, що багато художників тієї доби, створюючи свої полотна, використовували фотографії. Згадаймо, наприклад, П’єра Боннара, що знімав власну дружину Марту.

Однак Дега, який захопився фотографуванням у період із 1895 по 1896 рік, прагнув відобразити свій особливий погляд на сюжет: чи то був він сам, чи близькі та знайомі йому люди (серед яких Ренуар і Метерлінк), чи натурниці (Дега фотографував сестер Леролль, моделей Ренуара) або танцівниці під час розминки.

Нерідко дружні вечірки за участі Дега перетворювалися на сеанси фотографування, а гості — на моделей, яких художник просив стати у ті чи інші пози.

Ось, що згадує друг живописця Даніель Алеві у своєму щоденнику: «Він носився з одного кутка зали в інший. Обличчя його світилося від неосяжного щастя. Об одинадцятій годині всі пішли додому. Дега, який смішив дівчат, що його оточували, ніс свій фотоапарат гордий, наче дитина, яка несе свою рушницю».

Художник віддавав перевагу зйомкам за штучного освітлення, часто створюючи у своїх роботах містичну атмосферу, буквально «напускаючи туману» навколо персонажів, які немов би ступали у світло з темряви. Мистецтвознавці пояснюють це тогочасним захопленням Дега поезією символістів і скульптурами Альберта Бартоломе.
