Ідея «довгих картин» не нова: з ескізів, знайдених у блокнотах художника, очевидно, що він надихався сценами на давньогрецьких вазах й античних фризах. Під час подорожі в Італію в 1850-х роках Дега також познайомився з зображеннями процесій у мистецтві італійського Відродження XV століття.
